When it comes to cleaning, most bring out the cleaning products, mops, rags and sponges. But another great way to make your home feel fresh is to declutter! Some people have an emotional attachment to their ‘stuff’ without even realizing it. Not wanting to let go of things you longer use can be liberating and refreshing, but also free up space in your home.

Our cleaning company in Durham Region are experts at this and we have a few places where you can get started on de-cluttering your life!

Clothing

This is the best spot to start your decluttering process. Why? Because we all have items of clothing we rarely wear that are just sitting in our closets begging to be worn. From vintage ‘outdated’ pieces to trendy items we only wore once. Go through each piece of clothing. If you haven’t worn it in a year, off it goes! If the cost of your clothing was high and you don’t feel comfortable donating it, try consigning the items or selling them online through a buy and sell app. Otherwise, they can be passed on to friends and family members, or simply given donated.

Products

Under the sink in the kitchen and the bathrooms, you probably have a TON of products from hygiene, makeup, cleaning supplies and other random items that are either nearly empty and no longer being used or have barely been used are just collecting dust. SOME of the items can be donated to shelters, some will need to be disposed of properly and conscientiously, but there are others that can simply be recycled or thrown away. You will be so pleased with space you free up in these cupboards and shelves when you get rid of them!

Glassware/dinnerware:

Your kitchen is another place that easily gets cluttered. Whether you were given a collection of antique wine glasses passed on from a family member, or enough ‘World’s Best Dad” mugs to literally give to every dad in the county. We understand that dishes and glasses can have a personal attachment, but for those that don’t, we recommend donating them to a shelter or second-hand store. Alternatively, you can pass them on to family members.

Closets (outerwear):

The closet that stores you coats, jackets hats and mitts probably feels like an endless cave of unknowns. Our advice: just tackle it. Get it over with. The hats and mitts you longer wear, the winter coats that have been replaced with new ones will be ever so appreciated by those who cannot afford them. Outerwear Is often very expensive and many cannot afford proper clothing to keep warm in the colder months. It’s a great cause to be able to donate warm items you no longer use. Children who have outgrown their winter boots and shoes can help parents decide which ones they want to donate so they can be part of the process.

The garage:

Cue dramatic music. The garage is the first place people stuff the stuff they don’t know what to do with. Anything and everything goes into the garage and when the weather starts to warm up, it’s a great opportunity to open up the garage door and start doing a deep clean. While you decide what goes and what stays, keep a sign at the end of the driveway that says garage sale so people can come to check out what you are getting rid of and buy it off you then and there.
