‘Tis the Season

It’s getting colder out, the leaves are falling, and of course, everyone is starting to get sick. It’s that time of year where everyone you run into is fighting off a cold or flu. Did you know that when someone in your home, or a visitor, is sick – he or she can leave their cold and flu germs and viruses that can stay on surfaces for DAYS, continuing a cycle of illness.

What steps are you taking to make sure you or your loved ones don’t get sick? The easiest way to avoid getting sick is to disinfect the common areas of your home and to avoid sharing items when someone in your household is sick.

Disinfectant to the Rescue!

Germs can stay on surfaces for days, so it is important to know the most frequently touched/used places in the home. The key to keeping germs from spreading is to tackle these areas more often than you would any other time of the year. Some of the most common areas that are handled often in the home are door knobs/handles, light switches, stair rails, and toilet handles. When thinking about how not to spread a cold or the flu, many people are quick to reach for disinfectant sprays or wipes. These can be an effective means of killing many germs if used properly. These three steps are the proper way to disinfect surfaces:

  • Clean the surface by misting it with the appropriate cleaner and wiping that with a microfiber cloth.
  • Apply your disinfectant to the surface and allow that to sit for the recommended time found on the product label.
  • Rinse or wipe the surface to clean away any residue left by the disinfectant.

Sharing is NOT caring!

When you are sick, we all know Netflix is the cure. Chances are your sick family member is laying on the couch and binge-watching a TV show. The best way to reduce the spreading of their germs is to wash whatever comes into contact with them as soon as possible. If you have a sick family member remembers these tasks to stop the spreading of germs ASAP!

  • Wash communal throws weekly during cold and flu season. If someone in the house is coughing or sneezing, wash these items immediately.
  • Change bedding daily until the sick person is better.
  • Don’t share towels (hand, face or body), cups/utensils, food, and/or anything that can cause the spreading of germs.
  • Wash your hands anytime you interact with them, have them wash their hands as often as possible.

These are just small steps to take in preventing the spread of seasonal germs. Proper housekeeping techniques on a permanent basis will be the most efficient way to keep your home clean and germ-free!
